Dubai-based deeptech pioneer XPANCEO has successfully closed a $250 million Series A funding round
This significant investment, led by Opportunity Venture (Asia) – which also backed XPANCEO’s earlier $40 million seed round – cements its status as the UAE’s 12th unicorn. This achievement underscores a vibrant and attractive landscape for high-growth, technology-driven enterprises in the Middle East.
Co-founded in 2019 by physicist Dr. Valentyn S. Volkov and serial entrepreneur Roman Axelrod, XPANCEO is developing a groundbreaking multifunctional smart contact lens.
This ambitious device aims to integrate augmented reality (AR), continuous health monitoring, night vision, and optical zoom into a lens thinner than a human hair.
XPANCEO's vision extends to replacing a multitude of personal gadgets with a single, seamless wearable, heralding what co-founder Roman Axelrod envisions as the "post-smartphone era."
The substantial capital injection will primarily fuel the final development and commercialization phases of the smart contact lens. Strategic plans include expanding the company's global R&D, design, product, and operations teams.
Furthermore, the funding will expedite essential regulatory approvals and pilot tests, paving the way for the product's market introduction.
XPANCEO’s patented lens technology features nanophotonics micro-displays that project directly onto the retina, delivering AR experiences with a 30° field of view using remarkably low power (1–3 µW).
Beyond visual augmentation, these lenses are engineered for real-time health diagnostics, including intraocular pressure tracking for glaucoma and biochemical analysis of tear fluid for crucial biomarkers like glucose, cortisol, and various hormones.
Additional integrated innovations comprise wireless charging, night vision capabilities, optical zoom, and even color-blindness correction.
Such versatile functionalities position XPANCEO’s technology for diverse applications across the healthcare, industrial, defense, and consumer wearables sectors.
Built upon rigorous scientific research in nano-optics and biosensing, XPANCEO has already demonstrated tangible progress, having produced 15 working prototypes. Its commitment to innovation is further evidenced by contributions to 110 science publications, a rapid pace Dr. Valentyn S. Volkov attributes to their AI-driven R&D approach.
Looking ahead, the new funding will enable XPANCEO to scale its talent pool, advance regulatory compliance, and initiate pilot programs for various use cases.
This proactive strategy aims to solidify its position as a pioneer in consolidating personal technology into a single, unobtrusive wearable interface.
As Philip Ma, Managing Director at Opportunity Venture (Asia), aptly put it, “They’re not just building a product; they’re rewriting the rules of personal tech.”
It is important to recognize that a reported dip in monthly startup funding, such as that seen in June, rarely signals a fundamental weakness in a thriving ecosystem. Venture capital flows in the Middle East frequently exhibit volatility, influenced by the intermittent nature of large funding rounds.
XPANCEO's significant July raise underscores that substantial capital continues to target promising ventures, reflecting the ecosystem's underlying robustness despite short-term fluctuations.
